"Distance
education and open learning has a very
critical role in advancing the development
of Africa as it plays a central part in
enhancing participation and access in higher
education, within the current context where
demand far exceeds resources and
opportunities available in the conventional
contact institutions."
Prof. N. Barney
Pityana
Chairperson of the ACDE Executive Board
Principal and Vice Chancellor of the
University of South Africa (UNISA)
Prof. Barney Pityana has now been replaced by Prof. Nuhu Yaqub as Chairperson of the ACDE Executive Board.

ACDE Scholarship Program |
ACDE Scholarship Program has been launched with seed funding from the Ford Foundation.
Three scholarships were awarded in 2007 and six scholarships in 2008, on a competitive basis.
ACDE usually accepts only one nomination from each ACDE member institution that then competes with other nominations from across the continent.
Applications for the 2009 awards will be announced to ACDE member institutions in February 2009.
The Scholarship program is meant to expand opportunities to higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds
who intent to pursue and enhance careers especially in health, science, technology and education through distance and e-learning programs
with ACDE member institutions. The Finance and Development Committee, a sub-committee of the ACDE Executive Board, administers the scholarship through the ACDE Secretariat.
We invite well wishers who wish to contribute to the Scholarship fund to contact the Executive Director, ACDE Secretariat, P.o Box 8023-00100, Nairobi, Kenya or
director@acde-africa.org.
