

South Africa Hosts
ACDE Inaugural Conference and General
Assembly .
Unisa, the home
where ACDE was initially conceived and later
launched at Egerton University in Kenya,
hosted the first ACDE Conference and General
Assembly. The conference was convened under
the theme “The Mobilization of African
Leaderships: Policies, Strategies and
Partnerships”, and took place at the
University of South Africa, Pretoria from 10th
to 12th August 2005.
Objectives of the Conference
The conference was organized to provide
opportunities for exploring Partnerships and
strategic co-operation to participate in
setting priorities and an agenda for the
future of open and distance Education on the
African Continent.
Attendance
The conference was attended by nearly 250
delegates from Africa and beyond, including
10 government Ministers of Education and
other high ranking policy makers, academics
and Open and Distance Learning
practitioners. The Honourable Deputy
President of the Republic of South Africa,
Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and the South
African Minister of Education delivered the
keynote address. The Chairman of the African
Union sent a goodwill message to the
delegates at this conference.
Key
Outcomes of the Conference and General
Assembly
Among the outcomes of the ACDE inaugural
conference were: the resolution that a
permanent ACDE Secretariat be established in
Nairobi, Kenya; the election and
confirmation of ACDE Executive Board Members
for a period of three years up to 2008;
adoption of the ACDE Constitution which
until then had been interim; and the
development and adoption of the Tshwane
Manifesto on Distance Education in Africa.
